Who is SimplyPhilosophy

As a short introduction to embodied philosophy I must make it clear that I am by no means a philosopher or a scholar, though I would hope to be. Rather, I am someone who has thought about embodied issues a great deal. I have worked with thinkers like Hannah Arendt, and others like John Gray, and many of the themes we have talked about here have informed my work in ways I can't possibly describe. So, rather than start off by introducing myself, I want to point you to some foundational literature on the subject. The first place to start, if you are interested in learning more about the philosophy of embodied existence is with Michael Kuhn's text, Not by Sight Things: An Introduction to Embodied Philosophy. I think this is a superb book, which will explain why philosophers have taken this position, and I believe that if you are interested in learning more about the philosophical nature of embodied beings you should read this book. The second place to look for some foundational literature on the topic is the different books on the philosophy of mind by Nick Bostrom, and a book called Consciousness Explained by David Chalmers. Both of these books provide an excellent introduction to the kinds of questions philosophers of embodied existence have been asking for many years, and I'm sure that if you've read these two books you have an idea of what these books are about. The final place to look for some foundational work on embodied philosophy is among those who have written books about embodiment. For example, John Grier, Sarah Walsh, Alison Gopnik, Linda Bara, A.H. Ruch, Rebecca Montclair, and Laura Norris, and I could go on. These authors have done great work in answering questions such as whether human minds are embodied, whether consciousness depends on body experiences, what aspects of embodiment we are capable of experiencing, and much more. Keywords: american philosophy, asian philosophy, buddhist philosophy, eastern philosophy, greek philosophy, indian philosophy, western philosophy
